Point Reyes
An hour from the city and it does a fair Scottish Highlands impression, right down to the weather. Don't go May through August unless you want fog; there's a herd of tule elk out on the point that you'll see either way.

Crater Lake
Water blue enough that you want to get in, cold enough that you immediately want back out. We made it down to the shore the season before they closed the trail for repairs.
Savannah
Lived here two years. Spring is the season worth planning around and summer is the one to avoid, humidity being what it is. Ask me and I’ll give you the three-day version.
Mendochino
Small enough that we ran out of things to do by Saturday afternoon, which turned out to be the point. Rode the Skunk Train because you're supposed to — wouldn't bother a second time.
Tybee Island
Grew up in Nepal, so this was the first time I’d ever lived near a beach, and warm enough to swim in December besides. I turned down Drexel for a school down here, reasoning that a CS degree is a CS degree. It isn’t, and I transferred to Georgia Tech the following year, but I got this beach out of the deal. Best sunrises around, if you can get up for them.
